Following the Phrygian Cap - America the Fiduciary?

Phrygian Caps Part 3.



Here is an example of this historic symbol, worn by people seeking liberty throughout the ages. A cap with the flop on top folding toward the front, characteristically. Ancient civilizations, through French Revolution, to Americana - see it on state and federal symbols already and long-term in use.


We are looking at Phrygian Caps, as a possible national symbol - for an update on proposed quasi-legislation establishing the Phrygian Cap as a symbol of independence and self-determination (uber the lapel flag pin?) see PoseJuxta, Phrygian Cap, Symbol for Independence. Read about it there.



Where next for Fodder? Is it really hopeless? Everyone is somebody's fodder sometime. What can these little liberty caps do, as they have before. Something to set your cap for?



Some people might not want to wear the cap to promote "freedom" as was its history in the French Revolution and our own - the regular people, not the military - see Hello Fodder, Phrygian Caps. Some may think that everyone here is free already, or that it smacks of Revolution as in French. An alternate slogan for wearing one could be America the Fiduciary. That's an upgrade. You don't have to like someone, agree with them, love them, anything like that. You just have to act commercially and socially and politically with their interests at heart, on a par with yours - even higher. If you have superior knowledge or power that affects them and their choices and wellbeing, beyond their "ken," you are a fiduciary as to them. Why not? Except that people get rich the other way.

Still, worth fighting for.



The pharmaceutical industry, all sales, lobbyists, corporations, used cars, everybody, whether selling ideologies, in divorces (!), selling candidacies or any Things. No fogging allowed. America the Fiduciary. Oh, beautiful.



That would do away with Enron problems, those cheating high risk mortgage fine print issues, self-dealing, non-disclosure, government partisan stuff. Think about it. A new meme to set on the loose.

There go the lobbyists. A view of Pamplona in Washington.



That fiduciary attitude alone, if enforced by immediate new law as the new norm, would even get us back to the requirements of the Preamble to the Constitution. Even the Senate has to like it. Phrygian Caps Have Jumped the Fence! Meme on the Loose!

1. An unexpected but welcome developmen
t - Phrygian Caps have reached the mainstream consciousness already. See "Zits" in the funnies, in our own Hartford Courant 12/29/07. There is Jeremy - wearing, yes, wearing, a Phrygian cap.



And there, beside him, in case you are (Hush!) comically-challenged is his Dad.



We researched an earlier Phrygian Caps post, Fodder Wear, to find out about the "liberty hats" that came to symbolize freedom - and as early as Phrygians in Roman times. And earlier.



Today, we have proof positive that the world is ready for more - a Phrygian Cap resurgence- insurgence. And dandy illustrations, fair use.

The Corporation's Role - A Legal Person Where Real Persons In It Are Not Personally Liable For Injuries to Other Real Persons. Who's fodder now?

The Corporate Person - Meet a legal entity, a "person" under the law, but comprised of officers, a board, employees and shareholders.



A corporation is an odd animal. Here, fair use of our Helen Siegl print, "Exodus."



The corporation invests capital, promotes goods and services, now worldwide, and gets taxed, sells shares in itself, awards options if it wants, to those who then hold them and cash them if the going is good, letting them expire if the going is bad (no risk here), and can sue and be sued.



It often lobbies for its interests - this one is lobbying right now-- see it holding out the apple?



And it so far can air candidates' political advertising for free, and not have that free air time deemed to be a contribution to the campaign under McCain Feingold. See



And it distributes profits not needed for the business at that time (the officers/board decide where profits go, I believe) to shareholders and others through various vehicles, pays salaries and bonuses etc. of others working for it. It is identified by its tentacles, often entwined with tentacles of other corporations, or officials, etc. and seen under circumstances of mutual back-scratch.



Some now believe the structure has outlived its usefulness to the extent that corporations can and do exert more more power over government functions and actions than citizens ever could without a corporate mask or veil (look that up), see ://reclaimdemocracy.org/personhood/, and in some respects because shareholders, that own the corporation, get to divide its profits, but are not responsible for its debts. You can set up a corporation from and in most anywhere - start with Dubai, for example, at ://www.impz.ae/. You can avoid taxes here if you incorporate elsewhere. You can avoid some taxes here if you pick your state of incorporation carefully. Delaware has a niche there.



This is a complex area, but the main points are that people run corporations, benefit from them, but are not personally hit financially if there is a problem - the corporation pays, and the more the corporate people can get into their personal accounts before that happens, the better for them. This takes night school.



Now: Some basic questions to get you started in understanding:



Question 1. How can there be a free market concept when some in the market are immune from taking responsibility? Immigrants may want to know, as the rest of us fed the myth.



All is not clear. There may be places, and have been times when that helped economies - reducing personal risk - but consider whether anything global can or ever will be done to rein it in again, in the fiduciary sense.



Question 2: What would happen if corporations owed a fiduciary duty to their consumers, and only owed a duty to their shareholders and the corporation after they fulfilled their duty as fiduciaries to the consumers Imagine that. Would products and practices be safer? What would motivate that? What would we save on balance, or lose? What resources would be shifted where, and with what result.



Your being fodder now, Immigrant, in the shadow of the corporate person and its resources for communication and market shaping,. Can you extract yourself? Can any of us extract ourselves from a corporate reach? For all of us in the major aspects of our lives, who or what, and what purpose does the corporate person serve? Blue book question. Time's up.

How do multiple corporations, and then add fleshy people, interact in the play where we all are acting, to the benefit of the participants, but the expense of those to whom their goods are sold, most of the time? But the benefit of the shareholders.



Let's watch.



Here is an example of why some people do not sympathize with corporations, and how they "hurt" in a recession. Depression. This is an inside page of a menu* from Kramer's restaurant in Pittsburgh, from a dinner held at the expiration of 1929, and for a group called, the "Round Table Fellows."



*The menu: hors d'oeuvres, Bronx Cocktail (?), clear green turtle soup, Maderia, and on through the saddle of English mutton, Bomb Glacee, and others.

This was 1929, a few months after the stock market crash. Prohibition had been enacted back in 1920, and remained in effect until 1933. See //library.thinkquest.org/28892/prohibition/why/index.htm. Some things never got interrupted for some people at all.



Now, on the cover of the menu booklet, meet the corporation or other incorporated or otherwise person of means there at the end of 1929, identifying with a pauper looking for a handout, by using the same phrase, "Both Broke." But are they. This raises the issue of another group in our society - the Haves, and the Have-Nots.



And that, dear children, is why people like us, and a very sane Ralph Nader on this point in particular, think we should look again at the power of corporations over us. Accountability? Another chapter.

Fodder Wear - The Phrygian Cap - The Liberty Cap - Identify Yourself!

FodderWear. Fodder Ware. PeopleWear. See the little hat representing a tradition still alive, and originating with the ancient Phrygian Cap. It recurs in our symbolism even today - A Symbol of Liberation. Do an Images search for Phrygian Cap. Fodder worldwide have made this headware their own for millenia, as they seek to get out from Under.

Description. Look at the captive on the left front here, Arch of Septimus Severus, Old Rome. There is the cap -- note the peak facing over the top and to the front, not to the side or back, as we ordinarily do with hat droops. In those days, a slave once freed again could re-don his own headwear - so the Phrygian cap came to represent release. See below.

It is a cone-shaped, fitted cap, with a forward-leaning bulbous flop-over narrowing at the top, in red or sometimes yellow, but mostly red. It is used in many places as a symbol of freedom, or revolt against authority. See ://aramis.obspm.fr/~heydari/divers/marianne-eng.html.

Note that Smurfs wear them, and so does Punch of Punch and Judy, says the site listed as (1) at the bottom, with the other sources used so far. And, at the mail order grocery, the liberty cap mushrooms, that you may or may not eat, look like the hats on a pole.

Just wear it. If you do, however, be sure to adjust and pull the droop so it aims at your nose, not straight up. Some people have no style sense.

Unbundling Marketing - The Fodder Site Anti-Venom

HOW TO SEPARATE OUT SALES TALK FROM SUBSTANCE
What is the Real Reason for The Seller Wanting the Sale

UNBUNDLING MARKETING

Every proposal carries with it a hidden agenda. Without knowing the hidden agenda, somebody just might say "yes" too soon. It takes unbundling, looking at the reasons why someone is asking, and why you just might want to decline or accept, to make a sound choice. Try it:

Take a human situation: Proposal. Marry me.

Several responses are possible:

Responses

1. Great! Can't Wait! Let's call Mom.
2: Maybe, but I'd like to get to know you better.
3. No way. But thanks.
4. Or, worse: Hahaha!

Which is the one most appropriate to the situation depends on the information each has about the other -

Summary: Full disclosure? Make your choice. Incomplete disclosure? Watch out. Moral. A hasty answer to any big request or sales deal may lead to ruin in various ways. So, to avoid regret, unbundle the package before deciding. And if either party obstructs your getting the information you need, just say no.

Very wise, especially for fodder like us, who are also sitting ducks.

1. Unbundling as a concept. Back to our little marriage proposal here. The concept of unbundling as in the public interest is not new. Example:

1.1 Thinks she.

She seeks to figure out the proposal issue before her. The motive. Lo-o-o-ove. Or less, or different.

Maybe he really just needs a nanny for his six kids.

Or, is he broke, so he wants my dowry?

Is that florid complexion for negative health reasons, or hormonally based excitement at seeing me?

Does he cook, does he need me for that, does it matter, does he realize _________ , do you love me, who cares, etc.

What's the real deal being sold here. And what hyped up the dealer, softened up the dealee?

1.2 Thinks he.

And vice versa,thinks he, as he unbundles:

Oh, I just love yellow.
Oh - she is wearing yellow!
What if I can't help myself!

Is there a reason she won't let me see her at the full moon?
Why is this person laughing.

Do I hear a baby crying back there? Is someone else in the house?

1.3 Why the process of "unbundling" is practical. Examine the components. Unbundling requires having information, so if you can't get the information easily, you know it is propaganda. Somebody doesn't want you to Unbundle what they are selling.

1.3a. It saves time and energy, as an analytical tool. Even in government. Especially in government.

It saves taxes.

It means we can have smaller government, less regulation because people have to disclose in the first place. Novel idea.

Unbundling also means you can separate out what you want, deal with it, and see if you want more.

It is increasingly used in legal matters like divorce. People contract for certain services and pay for those, but not a full retainer up front or other billing procedure for an entire package deal. See Divorce Info.Com at ://www.divorceinfo.com/unbundling.htm.

1.3b. It saves the consumer-voter time and energy. If we learn to sift out propagada from arguments on merits, we don't have to reeducate ourselves all the time.

1.3c. How to do UNBUNDLE your own political views, or the next purchase:
  • To all fodder: Practice building in Time for yourself to consider and set apart the salesperson's craft from the product. The concept here provides for the viewer-victim-target (you and me) to Recognize, Reposition, and only then Respond.
  • Notice sound tactics. Here, nice alliteration, see ://www.tnellen.com/cybereng/lit_terms/alliteration.html. Alliteration itself is a marketing technique. Phrase your sales technique with the same sounds and make it easy to remember.
2. Then, when you see someone making a pitch, political or commercial or religious:
  • Recognize. Spot that this is a sales opportunity for someone who stands to gain, especially financially or politically. If the show suddenly fades out, be on the alert.
  • Reposition yourself away from the speaker. Detach, and identify the techniques being used, and separate them out immediately from the item or idea to be sold.
  • Spot the subtle components: Is it the background music - patriotic, martial, romantic, religious, misterrogers? What is in the background itself. Something equivocal that is eminently deniable if it is questioned? See Joy of Equivocating. Are questions on the screen suggesting the answer wanted, to shape your response, because of the highly charged or conclusory words used? Articulate or list them, as you start, to be sure you have them all. Some messages are barely suggestive, even subliminal, not even consciously perceptive, see //www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=liminal; some subliminal, below the conscious threshhold, some downright deceptive - the big fib earnestly presented.
  • Only after detaching should you even begin to consider whether to permit yourself an initial maybe. Peer closely at the product or idea, its merit itself after the coral is unbundled. Coral: tough accretions with stinging cells to catch plankton, generally speaking, see ://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coral. This technique alone is propaganda - a partial description, partially true, cherry-picked to make the propagandist's point. Add that to your list.

3. Is this defense against propaganda hopeless? Probably, still:

31 When the ad hits, note it.

Say, "This is only advertising. It is not objective and complete information."

Then Stop.


YOUR MINDSET SHOULD SAY, THIS IS PROPAGANDA, as your default approach.


3.1a. Example.

Anything packaged with a sunrise: make it go away. Plug your ears against the "new tomorrows, new beginnings, sun'll come up!" It's all gas. Don't look. Or look away, fast.

Go do something else, then return to look coldly at the idea or product, but only after unbundling the propaganda.

3.1b. Persist. Break down the message from the technique used to promote it, even if you are at a political convention. A savvy consumer could, hypothetically, be subjected to the ad, but be able to separate out the subliminals and liminals - and decide after that whether or not to bite. Are the PR people too smart to let us do that? Probably. Do it anyway.

4. But can you really resist? That is the problem. Watching for marketing is fine, but you don't even see it sometimes, before it has already hit your subconscious. Oh, that sun.... it wants me! I'll do it!

4.1 Inform yourself. Trust no huckster. Not even your own political party. Check everybody out.

a. Marketing of religion, in "Shopping for God: How Christianity Went from In Your Heart To In Your Face," by James B. Twitchell (Simon & Shuster). How do they sell thee? Let us count the ways.

b. Marketing of politicians - be careful about the TV talk shows. Keep Shirley MacLaine on PBS in mind - her point at a recent show was, we deserve what we elect. Those whom we elect are mirrors to what we have become.

Accountability. The sound of bucks stopping (or going offshore).

Fodder can be in charge only if fodder takes on responsibility for the charge. Sometimes, of course, that is beyond reach, for those forced into fodder. Others of us fall into it out of laziness or willful ignorance. The buck stops with us - voluntary, or passive, fodder. Charge it to the future? Guilty as charged. Light Brigade.

The move from being propaganda fodder is possible in some cases -- to become a fully participating citizen-making-real-choices, and holding all speechifying accountable.
Sometimes impossible.

Not known until tried.

Unbundling. A way for fodder to do the wheat-chaff bit before swallowing. Sitting ducks. Do we choose to sit. If so, we are sat upon.

What To Do With Energy That Loses Its Outlet. What is Reality?

Where does it go next. 
It tries to do the same thing somewhere else.

After the ball was over. What happens to energy when any big effort is over and people have to go home? Whether war, elections, retirement. Energy morphs* into something else. Watch for it. Energy come home after the focused exertion is still a live wire on the road, just looking for another center. See FN 1.

1.  The Crusades. 

Look at the Knights of Malta after the Crusades, and what happened to their energy - this in Prague - see ://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/smom.html; and ://www.prague.cz/prague-lesser-town.asp.

After the wars, after their cause was lost, they were out of work, got in trouble, many kicked out of one place, only to emerge in another like other specialized groups. Many created a new role. Hire themselves out to fight elsewhere, like Poland - set up at Malbork, and kill the Orthodox and others, as though they were not already Christian, so that Roman Christians can move in.  Change partners. Change forms. Keep the skills and keep making money.

2. War Propagandists. 

Persuasion takes and is energy. When it loses its original topic focus, it also morphs. It does not go away, and neither do the people who push it.  So - What happens to propaganda and its energy once a war is over?

The Swiftboats come out.  Revise history. Slather on something, anything.

After World War I, the propagandists found that their opinion-shaping work could take the place of news. And people did not mind or apparently notice. Look at John Dewey in The New Republic after WWI. He pointed at propaganda (this is WWI era, remember) being disguised as news - see ://www.firstworldwar.com/features/propaganda.htm. Scroll down to "Post War propaganda."

Look now. Propaganda means altering a communicated reality. War looks good, for a time. Through some lenses. But what is reality after a war. Do we look at the reality that was there all the time, behind the curtain at the little man pulling levers, or not. After Iraq, for example, our work just begins in reining in those we nurtured to do that job.

What if Mary here is "war." What is she like after the war is over? After the crusade.Techniques of persuasion. Edward Bernays took the PR skills to New York and could persuade most anyone of anything, using billboards, ads, voice-overs. What form next time for our propagandists when this particular campaign is over.

How the public was convinced in WWI:

Woodrow Wilson established the Committee on Public Information, under one George Creel, to sway the public to support Wilson's desire to enter WWI. Those tactics are now part of the mainstream -
  • appealing to feeling, and
  • turning an opponent into an evildoer.
He was followed by Edward Bernays - and, as to him, there is actually a Public Relations Museum, laying out how he as a master of propaganda in WWI operated. The propagandists getting us into World War I (whether that was a good idea or not) instilled these ideas in the public mind:
  • Fear of a powerful and malignant Other out to get you;
  • We will interpret those actions for you; and
  • Your Obedience is required.

The techniques he put in motion are with us today. Consider: Promoting government and private objectives have the same goal: How to make the unpalatable sound delicious, desirable, acceptable at least. Those objectives use the same techniques. Persuasion management, perception control, as our newer names for "propaganda", is an integral part of our consumer, religious and political culture. Whether you agree with the objective to join in the Great War or not, the point is here the distilling and use of sales techniqnes to sway populations - the birth of Madison Avenue as well as presidential propaganda. The CPI. In 1917, techniques to do just that were used by George Creel, journalist. He was appointed head of the CPI, and his trademark tactics include these, that sound like the herding going on in Congress today, and elsewhere:

Action in the woods. Threat, or not?

An issue always is, how do we know?

For the persuader, don't let the people ask the question. They must accept yoru conclusion. So, who taught us the conclusion, to fear, to disparage, to reject, without showing us the underlying facts?

It may look like this fellow is evil, and a threat to us. Shoot! But perhaps he is just seeing if there are any little birdies in there, his business, and he is in the woods, his turf, doing what comes naturally. Is there counter-intelligence, or is someone else naming him as an evildoer enough for us to get the guns out.

The anti-bear lobby will demonize the bear - any bear - anyway. Shoot it. Must we stand by while that happens? What other recourse. Is there really a threat here. The persuasion management team will not let you think.

Woodrow Wilson in 1917 faced the issue of how to mobilize this country for war, to get the unity needed to do that.

He set up a committee dedicated to accomplishing that mission. A public relations advertising feeding frenzy.

Get the critical mass of unity needed among citizens to support the push.

And President Wilson appointed an expert as its head.

He put a journalist in charge.

Soon there were drums beating all over - the CPI was very busy:
  • speakers placed at strategic points who urged buying Liberty Bonds.
  • films, advertising, news releases, slide shows.
  • a Division of Pictorial Publicity.
  • books published: The CPI put out "Red, White and Blue Books," and "Four Minute Men"
  • more speechifying.
  • use the Boy Scouts to spread the message into homes.
  • pamphlets were sent periodically to teachers.

Media Ownership Shape-Shifting. FCC and the Death of the Fiduciary

The sound of news, breaking. If no-one is watching, does it make a noise?

The sound of fodderizing. If no-one is watching, does it matter.

To fodderize: Disregard except for the specific use imposed to benefit the fodderer, fodder is often used in the context of feed, etc., see generally ://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1O999-fodder/.

How is the public turned into fodder?

The public becomes fodder when a government agency morphs a) public service and fiduciary responsibility into b) just another opportunity for a sales oriented sideshow, a profiteer's dream. This affects us all, but when does it matter. Fodderizing is a government and industry-wide epidemic. An accelerated death of accountability.

Watch the FCC attack now on the last vestiges of even remotely possible neutral information for people, the chance at a responsible public forum - their newspapers - and other media objectively presenting all sides. See the coming entertainment instead of real, analytical, neutrally presented news; see the shaping of public opinion with the public in the dark. A stealth campaign to manage perception.

We are thinking here again of the FCC with its rule change. How many varying interests are being treated like fodder there - the proof of this pudding will be where the head of the FCC becomes employed after leaving (heaving?) the FCC. Watch and let me know what you think two years from now.

Extractors and partisans vs. fodder and fiduciaries. Guess who wins. And it's the holidays, so consumers don't care. And if they do, they don't count either. Quick. Before 2008 while the pickin's are good.

When Force is an Agenda - How it is Sold.Torture.

Why is force still the first recourse. Waterboarding, to mass deportations, family abuse, slaughter houses, everywhere. How much force and warfare is justified, if at all, and when.





Pizzaro did it one way (this is in Trujillo, Spain), with government approval. Now we have more choices.



Part of force is how to prepare for a possible battle need, while keeping under control what force does to people who use it. Force is addictive?



A way to sell torture, for example, is to define it out, then do it by another name. See Hello, Fodder, Euphemism as a Sales Tactic. Torture is euphemized into enhanced interrogation so the people can't even talk about the same thing without using different words. Why do we tolerate it? It has become part of our foreign policy, is that right?

"J'Accuse!" Emil Zola , Alfred Dreyfus: 1898. Coverups and Justice Departments. Countering Propaganda

"J'Accuse" - The French novelist and critic, Emil Zola, protested by this public letter in 1898 the ongoing imprisonment of French Captain (artillery officer and also a Jew) Alfred Dreyfus, for treason. Dreyfus' innocence had been proven by the authorities' own identification of the real perpetrator. Then came the government Cover-ups. The open letter was called, "Greatest Newspaper Article in History."



A year after Dreyfus was found guilty and imprisoned, the officers discovered the real perpetrator, one Esterhazy. Despite clear evidence of Esterhazy's guilt, the officers feared embarrassment to the army and proceeded with one of the most blatant coverups, including a trumped-up acquittal of Esterhazy

No issue is an island. It takes risk and strength to support fodder against the authorities with their own agendas. Here, the Ile de Paris. Zola-Dreyfus Chronology:



1894: Arrest, treason trial and conviction of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a Jew and artillery officer.

1896: Army officers who brought suit knew Dreyfus was innocent, and that Esterhazy was guilty, but covered it all up for fear of embarrassment, and even concocted an acquittal for Esterhazy. They used forgery, perjury, obstruction of justice (see Flagpole article) to do it - some 8 conspirators, including high-rank officers.



1898: "J'Accuse!" Open letter by the French Emil Zola, novelist and critic, see biography at kirjasto.sci.fi/ezola, to the President of France on January 13, 1898, protesting the conviction of Alfred Dreyfus in a treason trial.



1898: Zola's article began a shift in public opinion toward Dreyfus.



1898: Zola was tried for criminal libel, even though the evidence that Dreyfus was innocent was clear, Zola was convicted in a circus atmosphere, including strong anti-semitic activity, and sentenced to one year in prison. Zola flees to England.



1899: French appellate court reversed the trial court in Dreyfus, and ordered retrial. Public opinion turns toward Dreyfus.



1899: Zola returns to France; libel charge against him dismissed, but Zola devastated financially.



1899: Retrial for Dreyfus. And reconvicted!



1899: Dreyfus pardoned and released. This is like Alice in Wonderland.



1902: Zola found dead in home, gas asphyxiation, some believe homicide by "right wing extremists who, hating him for defending Dreyfus, stopped up his chimney." Flagpole article.



1906: Dreyfus' conviction reversed, adjudicated innocent now. Reinstated, promoted.



1906: before or after - no conspirators were charged/punished for any criminal act



1908: Zola remains moved from Montmartre Cemetery to Pantheon in Paris. See the Pantheon at www.paris.org/Monuments/Pantheon/. Dreyfus attended.



It doesn't end there. Gregori, "a right-wing journalist," shot Dreyfus twice, wounding him. And right wing newspapers praised Gregori for his noble gesture. Gregori, the attempted assassin, was tried and acquitted.



This, after Thanksgiving, is dedicated to the right wings of turkeys.

The 20th-21st Centuries; Amended List. Growing and limited only by the imaginations, more sophistocated techinques, and machinations of the persuaders. Now: add

8. "FUD" for Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt - the phrase coined in the 1970's by IBM in order to undermine the work of a competitor. See Joy of Equivocating, FUD - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. Take one idea, distort it out of its context, conceal or deny contrary facts, and press your skewed conclusion until someone buys it. Swiftboating can be by literalism, ignoring the "figure of speech" context and complaining that a rhetorical exaggeration should be taken literally, or by other mispresentation. Look up figures of speech at ://www.nipissingu.ca/faculty/williams/figofspe.htm so you can spot them, and defend against the propagandists who will argue that the exaggeration for effect is to be taken literally.

10.  Purposeful confusion.  This is like transfer:  take the best of what the other side has to offer, and claim it as your own. We are the party of transparency!  Buy the Brooklyn Bridge.

11. Propaganda by Subtext. Here we refer to the ads that use imagery and words that evoke messages geared to associate a negative, or a fearful, to an otherwise ordinary message.

Take, for example, in the 2008 election, putting Barack Obama in the same commercial with white gorgeous (at least, cute) young women known for flaunting their bods. The verbal message is indeed neutal and not sexual - Obama is just a celebrity as they are celebrities.

But take away the sound, and the nonverbal message is black man and white young women, and this needs to stop.

Or, Barack Obama with words on the ad that are evocative of all the anti-Christ and novels about that - watch out, here he is. Suggest he is Muslim, and worse because he is secretive about it. All that is deniable. Those words and specific associations are not made. Just impled, hit you in the face, suggested and even the illustrations match. Eminent propaganda, Propaganda by subtext, just below conscious, but effective because it is below the radar. .

Your job if you are a thinking citizen.

Fix. Fix the list. Fix it in your head. Fix one on every wall, in every schoolroom, home, bus, subway, airport, slipouts in magazines, wallet-size cards, TV, and any electronic device, over which words lure us in like carnivorous plants.

Looking At Leaders and What Is Fostered - Educated, Willing Followers; or More Consumers

The Role of Leader


People make money off this issue. Look at the seminars. One defines good leadership by the willingness of the followers. Then come these qualities: 



Vision: make it, communicate it, take responsibility for it and drive it home. Discipline, passion about the issue, action, inspiration. See article by David Hakata, ://www.hrworld.com/features/top-10-leadership-qualities-031908/:  Integrity. Consistent with inner values. Honesty, predictability, control. Dedication. Do what it takes to do it. Magnanimity. Humble, Open, Creative. Fair, assertive, fun - relieves tension.



Good list.



Add this dilemma:  The dilemma of any leader: to serve the long-term interest of the many, or the short-term interest of the few. With any long-term matter, there is uncertainty of outcome. And the resistance of those who need a firm position and assurance instead - eager to follow the one who will fill in the blanks. See our fear of fog at Joy of Equivocating.



Discuss "consistency" further. This overall issue is addressed by Hakata's "integrity."  But the discussion only touches the surface.



We hear that a change of position to meet a changing need is political death. We disagree. So long as whatever position is taken is consistent with inner values, then it is not merely to meet a political expediency.  A good leader can indeed alter plans to meet new needs. It is a matter of defining "consistency" to mean consistency with inner values, not with positions once taken that now are not appropriate.



Role of current events or claims, on leadership:  Fear is a great distractor.





Any leader beset with a climate of fear, uncertainty and doubt has to address those with confidence and plan.  Followers who are distracted cannot follow.



Heck, can't even get up.



A leader must address the rumor mills, set facts straight, keep moving.



A leader who is not also government has a particular problem.



A government marketing an ideology is not the same as a leader with vision.  A government marketing ideology will foster the consumers among us, who do not want to be interrupted in their lifestyles, just let them buy in and they will go back to their business. How can a leader without that bully pulpit promote another vision. An ideology needs a distracted citizenry. A true leader without the force of government needs willing followers, and that means information, inclusion, respect.  



Women leaders.  Another issue.  Is it true that they need more empathy ability, flexibility, interpersonal skills than men, and probably already have much of that. Understand, support, value. Extractor leaders in the bushes:  Those serve themselves and their cronies, and promote the fodder status of those who can be used. And marginalize the fiduciary-minded. A government that rather serves the public interest will foster fiduciary, civic-minded citizens. Proof of puddings.

Who is asking you to dance and why?

Here come the Marketers, for their own purposes, or on your behalf, to enhance your wellbeing in some way; to promote a view or response in a partisan way, without accountability or transparency as to process; or with full disclosure.

Perhaps the wooer is a fiduciary, seeking a common good, transparency, consensus stability without force where that can be done reasonably, a movable concept. People dance with the partners they choose.

How do other people's leaders interact with their people? Try reading Harry Potter. Your children are. The great battle themes, and rulers vs. the people, there are universals. The peace that finally sets in lasts only 19 years - about the same time between the World Wars. Not much time. A sequel in the making. Start a dialogue - the battle course in Potter to the news. The qualities of leaders, both sides, and our own.

Articulate your own position out loud, even if no-one else is interested. It focuses thinking. Sometimes. Concluding so far: the least violent and punitive choice, the narrow way, despite the drive for revenge or taking pleasure in power, works. Can we start at home - every choice that impacts another being to be the narrowest one. It is enough, as Harry found. At least until the next 19-year cycle starts.

Small afterthought: Isn't it true: that any violence, or compulsion, against anyone, for any reason, goes against the teachings and life of the main religious namesakes? For western theologians, reread and see if you find the main person to have forced any one, to any path, ever. Did that person not lay out the choice, let the person choose, no chasing or punishing or judging.

FODDER. The fodder group represents the cultural expendables du jour. "Inferior or readily available materials used to satisfy a particular demand." See //www.m-w.com/dictionary/fodder. No clout.

People as fodder experience a range of treatment: from the passive - where they are ignored - to the deadly - where crimes are committed against them, the hate crime target. Fodder are culturally considered out of the loop. The bug under the boot. Those trying to get to the dock, only to be left behind, or seen as deserving to be left behind.

Refugees are often fodder, when time goes by and they are still there. Along this section of the Berlin Wall, how many died along its length, or while kept behind. Fodder is the ultimate bottom rung in the ladder idea, of who's on top, who's not. Fodder is kept from getting a firm hold on even that bottom rung. 1. For static fodder, staying in one place, their economic or social services may well be indispensable, but are not valued. Traveling gypsies, for example, with trades that they brought with them to communities, then moved on. See Gypsies, Roma, and the fodder references in literature at Gypsies, Roma, Fodder post.

2. Hate crime targets. Others are targets for hate crimes by the majority. Sometimes this stems from a cultural memory of who was enslaved, such as Gypsies in Romania, and the collective idea that those 400 years created an irrevocable under-caste persists, regardless. You still can do what you want with them, with impunity.



3. Those who refuse or fail to assimilate as directed. Staying apart from the mainstream helped some survive. Women and children on the road with the men out of sight - that may forestall an attack that the man's presence could bring on, if they were lucky. See "Bury Me Standing," at ____. The desire not to assimilate has prompted outrage. Jews, Gypsies. See Gypsies, Roma; Petr Ginz, Lens and Legacy. Others may try to assimilate, but their appearance sets them apart.

4. The poor. Fodder can include regular people who are trying to meet their basic needs, but just not making it. Or kept from making it. Fodder are heavily targeted, especially by the "extractors" among us - a thousand years of attacks on, for example, Gypsies, Roma, Romani. Fodder are also attacked by consumers who like things the way they are, so long as they are set on their own rung, and fault poverty - get a job, while not looking at the traps in place. Governments put people in fodder lines, as in a holocaust or ethnic cleansing setting, or immigrants in a time of transition and before a society catches up. All fodder is stuck.

5. Soldiers ill-equipped or ill-used. Soldiers can be fodder when they are marched in front of the artillery. Or people can be fodder when they are sold flawed medicines, food, or products. Or their cost of goods rises and pushes them back into poverty or any reasonable excess over basic needs, while others' remuneration skyrockets. Big gaps. Fodder as the middle class? Maybe.

6. The murdered, for political or religious gain for others. Some in the fodder lines rise heroically regardless, or resist in the only ways left - including maintaining identity, or helping others in the line. Like Petr Ginz - the Prague child of mixed "blood" in the Nazi fodder lines - see post in The Places of Petr Ginz, re Mischling status. He was unable to get out, but resisted in the only ways left - maintaining his identity as a writer, artist and doer, as long as he could. Fodder does not mean fault. It can be circumstance.

7. The status fodder. Or fodder is a status - the disabled, the differently abled, the injured who can't get care, who have no choice in working conditions. Where there is no union, or other way to get clout, so the industries set the safety standards, and the workers have no say. All fodder.

8. Those injured by non-safety standards. More fodder. Capitalism rules.

9. Immigrants.

To a citizen-serving governments, no-one is or should be "fodder."

To marketer governments, however, fodder is good, for the deologues, consumers and extractors.

6. Social Groupings

PARTISANS - LOYALISTS - REVOLUTIONARIES.

If you choose us, then you are ours.

Does this grouping mean total loyalty, commitment to a viewpoint, plan of action. Little if any ongoing assessment after commitment made publicly, little likelihood of changing position. Loyalty to the group or leader is foremost. Fixed. Religious, political. Loyalists historically have supported the status quo, with revolutionaries or insurrectionists seeking change, as in the American Revolution. Is that still true? Not for partisans in WWII, Spain, Slovakia?

Partisans - here, in warfare. People sold on a particular cause, willing to fight to the death for it. Pros and cons, depending on who agrees with the partisan's view. When does the partisan serve the common good, and when a narrow self-interest of a persuasive leader.

For Eastern Europe, it was a saving that the partisans, and the Gypsies, came down from hiding in the mountains to fight the Nazis, at Banska Bistrica, Slovakia. This was so, even though the fight was manipulated and timed to suit the puppet government. The children of the area still see tanks every day they pass. There are the tanks from the Nazi fights. And there were Russian planes, one placed on museum grounds there.

For other nations, partisanship tears its fabric apart. People sold on ideas for the wrong reasons, by people who did not have a greater good in mind at all.

What is worth being a partisan about: For the US, several philosophies undergird the US nation, as its framework. We stem from partisans. It took partisans for us to become independent. For the US, there are clear frameworks for decisionmaking: and that is to serve the common good.

What is the place of force: Those documents authorize only that force which is clearly, demonstrably and narrowly, necessary to meet the immediate objective of survival and welfare needs, for enforcement of appropriate and just law, and for deterrence-defense.

Without that reluctance, what will be left of this for our children. So far, it is here. Somewhat. Years later.

It sounds like this: The mantle of elected office begins with a majority, but the elected official then must become fiduciary, for the common good, if the leader is to comply with our framework to serve the welfare of the people.

We flunk. A people left behind. Act.
